Cobalt

Basic Properties:

  • Chemical Symbol: Co
  • Atomic Number: 27
  • Periodic Table Classification: Transition Metal
  • Physical Properties: A hard, lustrous, silvery-gray metal. It has a high melting point (1495°C) and is strongly magnetic.
  • Chemical Properties: Relatively resistant to corrosion and oxidation, and reacts slowly with dilute acids.

Importance and Uses:

Cobalt is a strategic metal in modern technologies, and its most important uses include:

  1. Manufacturing Lithium-ion Batteries (sometimes called Lithium-Cobalt Batteries): It is used in the manufacture of the electrodes (cathodes) of these batteries, giving them high energy density and thus increasing their lifespan and efficiency. This is currently the largest use of cobalt, accounting for about 50% of global demand, driven by the electric vehicle and portable electronics revolution.
  2. High-Performance Alloys (Superalloys): Cobalt is added to steel and nickel alloys to create materials highly resistant to heat and abrasion. These alloys are used in:
  • Jet engine turbine blades.
  • High-speed cutting, machining, and mining tools.
  • Artificial joints (prosthetic limbs).
  1. High-Power Magnets (NdFeB Magnets): Cobalt is a component of these very powerful permanent magnets, used in hard drives, wind turbine generators, and high-efficiency electric motors.
  2. Chemical and Catalytic Applications:
  • Paint and Varnish Dryers: Cobalt salts (such as cobalt octate) are used to accelerate the drying of paints and varnishes.
  • Catalysts (Auxiliary Reagents): In the petrochemical industry.
  1. Medical and Biological Applications:
  • Nuclear Medicine: The radioactive isotope Cobalt-60 (Co-60) is widely used in radiation therapy for cancer patients, as well as in sterilizing medical equipment and food (to eliminate bacteria).

Occurrence and Mining:

  • Cobalt does not occur naturally in its pure form, but is usually associated with nickel or copper ores.
  • The world’s leading producer is the Democratic Republic of Congo, which produces more than 50% of the world’s supply.

Other exporting countries include Russia, Australia, Canada, Cuba, and the Philippines.
